ADMIRAL 4.3%

Pale Ale - "Pine, herbal and citrus notes"

Single hopped with British Admiral Hops.

Admiral hops were created at the Horticulture Research Int. at Wye College & have been in use since 1998. They have a relatively high alpha acid % making it useful as a bittering hop but it also gives a woody and herbal hoppy character, although not overbearing with some citrus fruit flavours coming through.

JANUARY

MAD MONK 7.1%

Imperial Stout - "A big and complex downright kick ass beer" SIBA NATIONAL GOLD Winner 2011 Strong Ales (over 5.6%)

Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English Brewers who supplied the Court of Russia's Catherine the Great; Mad Monk has developed a cult following wherever it goes. It's a rich, intense brew with big complex flavours and warming finish. The colour is Henry Ford 'Black' and it has a massive bitterness level of 75 IBU's.

The beer pours with a frothy tan head that would make even Starbucks envious. It’s loaded with chocolate and coffee aromas, roast notes and bready yeast. It’s a rich mouthful, sweet, even luscious, but nicely balanced by the somewhat unusual, all American hops for this style, Cluster, Northern Brewer and Centennial.

FEBRUARY

PALISADE 4.1%

American Pale Ale - "A single hopped pale ale"

A New Year clear out of the cold store and see what we found! And can you see what we’ve done again - cunningly name the beer after the hop variety.

MARCH

MOSAIC 4.2%

American Pale Ale - "A single hopped pale ale"

Mosaic is the first born child of Simcoe. Some people have described it as Citra on steroids, but it's much more than that. Rich in Mango, lemon, citrus, earthy pine, tropical fruit, herbal and stone fruit notes.

Mosaic combines a complex hop aroma with fairly high alpha-acids and low cohumulone levels which make it a perfect triple purpose hop and provides clean bitterness and aroma profiles that cannot be accomplished by other hops or blends; a one off!

APRIL

CHALLENGER 4.0%

Pale Ale - "Smooth flavour with floral character"

Single hopped with British Challenger Hops.

Challenger hops were first bred at Wye College in 1961. It has moderate levels of essential oils giving balance with a smooth flavour with floral character and some spice. FIRST GOLD 4.0%

Single hopped with British First Gold Hops.

Brewed solely with First Gold English hops, this Pale Ale has a pronounced floral hop aroma, and a clean, fresh and slightly spicy flavour with hints of orange.

MAY

BELTANE 4.7% (Down from 5.7%)

A Black Country style Ruby Mild - "A classic Dark Ruby Mild"

Originally brewed in 2010 as Weapon of Mash Destruction and typical of a Black Country Mild. It is intensely dark, almost black in colour, with a lovely red tinge. It has a coffee coloured head, bubbly to begin with, but settles down quickly to form a thickish covering. The aromas are predominantly malty, but with a pleasant fruit smell - almost wine-like and seem to smell of grapes, plums and raisins. The texture is rich and full bodied for a Mild. It feels smooth in the mouth and has a silky texture.

The main flavours are rich fruit, but the initial fruitiness mingles with a caramel/toffee flavour, with elements of nuttiness from the roasted malt. To start it seems very sweet, but this is replaced by an increasing bitter dryness that comes through in the finish. The aftertaste is lingering and has a pleasant fruit aspect.

JUNE

TARGET 3.8%

English Ale - "A Pale Ale with strong antipodean hop flavours"

Single hopped with British Target Hops.

A modern, fruity English Ale. Single hopped with English Target hops and a combination of specialty malts. Target Hops were bred at the Hop Research Institute at Wye College in England and were first released in 1992 and are widely used in the UK for both bittering and aromatic qualities. SEPTEMBER

CALYPSO 4.1%

American Pale Ale - "A single hopped pale ale"

A straw coloured American Pale Ale with pleasant aromas and what aromas. Descriptors include lemons, tart apples, cherry blossoms, black pepper, bitter orange, mint and pear. The aroma is at once distinctly American, insofar as it is remarkably unsubtle and sappy, while also being very fruity but with subtle rather than aggressive hop flavour.

OCTOBER

SAMHAIN 4.5%

Dark Ruby Ale - "Lots of aroma from the wonderful Bramling X hops"

Samhain literally means “summer's end.” In the Celtic era, autumn ended in the first week of November with the festival of Samhain [the "mh" is pronounced as "v"] which marked the end of the Celtic year. This was the “Witches Sabbath” when the spirits of the dead were said to come out of their graves, and this ghoulish fright-night aspect is still part of modern Halloween.

A dark ruby colour – lots of aroma from the wonderful Bramling X hops plus hints of flavour and aroma from the addition of fresh ground coriander.

OCTOBER

SUMMIT 4.5%

American Pale Ale - "A single hopped pale ale"

First brewed March ’11 as part of our U.S.A. single hop series, ‘Summit’ is a recently-released high-alpha dwarf variety. It is grown on a low trellis system and is not machine harvestable, so these hops are gently picked by hand and are thus less damaged by the harvesting process. Strong orange, tangerine and grapefruit citrus notes and insistent flavours come to the fore.

NOVEMBER

POPPY 4.5%

India Pale Ale "An India Red Ale"

This is an ale that is not afraid of standing tall. A medley of all American hops gives this red ale an intense, sharp and fruity hoppiness but backed up with a complex, caramel malty structure. Big, yet refreshing, bold but balanced. (10p from each pint sold is donated to The Royal British Legion – Poppy Appeal.)

NOVEMBER

HUNG, DRAWN & PORTERED 5.2%

NOVEMBER

POT CALLING THE KETTLE 5.2%

Black IPA - "An Black IPA "

A Black IPA' (some call it a 'Hoppy Porter'). Names that convey the fact that this beer is a contradiction of styles: fresh and hoppy, yet dark and rich. Most importantly it is delicious.

Brewed with a twist; 50 IBU’s in bitterness and a colour of 31; using five different malts, including Pale, Melanoidin, Crystal, Pale Chocolate and Black Patent, this beer bursts with roasted malt flavours, and is hopped with two New Zealand varieties - the wonderful Nelson Sauvin and NZ Cascade plus Styrian Goldings.

This year we have used the same malt base as last year but have upped up the 'chocolate and orange character' with more NZ Cascade hops. Much too drinkable!

DECEMBER

Deep Amber, a traditional winter ale with subtle Winter spices at the finish.

DECEMBER

DOUBLE ESPRESSO 4.4%

Freshly ground Brazilian Bourbon coffee exclusively prepared for All Gates is added to the copper to provide a double hit of coffee aroma and taste. DECEMBER

MILK STOUT 4.5%

Traditional Milk Stout - "A Traditional Milk Stout"

Brewed using milk sugars (Lactose) to produce a wonderful smooth pint; just like cream in your coffee. Dark and delicious, a great milk stout which will change your perception about what a stout can be. Brewed with Crystal, Munich, Roast Barley, Flaked Wheat and Chocolate Malt plus Magnum & East Kent Goldings hops with a low 25 EBU's.

DECEMBER

SLOE STOUT 7.2%

Fruit Beer "A complex fruit stout"

Brewed to the same recipe as our SIBA National Gold Award Winning stout Mad Monk; but to a slightly higher ABV; Sloe Stout is loaded with the same chocolate and coffee aromas and roast notes but to each firkin we have added wonderful freshly picked organic sloe berries and allowed the beer to condition in cask for two months.

The acidity of the sloes provides a perfect foil to the rich beer. The additional conditioning also dries the beer. It is best served on gravity behind the bar at room temperature, rather than chilled in a cellar and dispensed by hand pump as the Sloe flavour is masked below 15 C. So if you are served a chilled pint, simply leave it to warm up; it'll be worth the wait and then please drink sloely!
