Bexley's Fifth Beer Festival: AllGates Mad Monk tops festival requests.

In just five years Bexley Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has built up a steady following for its annual beer festival. This year’s event, held at Sidcup Sports Club in Sydney Road, Sidcup, attracted more than 1,000 enthusiasts.

On offer were 65 beers from real ale breweries across the country, as well as nine ciders and perries. South Sea Spice, from Bowmans Ales in Hampshire, whose brew includes fresh root ginger, was voted one of the favourite beers of the weekend and was also one of the first to run out.

The other joint favourite was Mad Monk, a Russian imperial stout brewed by AllGates in Wigan, Lancashire.

Also quick to run out were Mary Jane, a pale beer brewed by the Ilkley brewery in west Yorkshire and a pale ale, brewed using American hops by Dark Star in west Sussex.

Festival goers voted Woblee Bus, brewed with raspberries by Magic Bus from Horton Kirby near Dartford, the top cider.

Many drinkers took advantage of the sunny weather top watch the club’s cricket and rugby matches, while others just enjoyed the sunshine.

Camra’s, Alan Boakes said: "The weather did us proud."
